Setting your Compass Bearing for Success

Without a plan, who knows where you'll end up!

A very wise person once told me that “If you fail to plan, you plan to fail.”  He was absolutely right!  If you don’t know what you want, how on earth do you expect to get it?  You wouldn’t go trekking through the woods without a map and compass and the same principle applies to your health and fitness journey. What you need is a destination, or a goal, and a plan to help you get there.   Here’s some guidelines to help you get started.

STEP 1: BRAINSTORM.  What is the end result that you desire (your treasure or reward)?  This will be highly individual.  Some people want to look good on the beach this summer while others want to run a marathon or bench 300lb.  Other goals may involve participating in a fundraising event for a charity or cause that means a lot to you.  There are no bad goals!  Some may not be realistic but that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t think BIG.  Challenge yourself. Dare to dream.

STEP 2: DRAW YOUR “X”.  You are creating a map that leads to the treasure.  If you are a visual person, you may want to use pictures or words that represent your successful outcome and use them to create a VISION BOARD.   [Use a piece of bristol board, a bulletin board, or even a whole wall for this]. You can also use a calendar or word document to organize your plan.  ALWAYS WORK BACKWARDS from the date you want to achieve your goal.

STEP 3: PLAN YOUR ROUTE.  There is more than one way to get to your destination but it sure helps if you think about the challenges you need to overcome along the way.  What do you need to reach your goal?  Do you need to change your habits?  Get some information about healthy eating and exercise?  Do you need a coach?  Think about what you need and what you need to do to get from here and now (POINT A) to then and there (POINT B).  Set benchmarks or checkpoints along the way so that you know how you are doing along the way.  This keeps you on track and prevents you from getting lost in the woods.

STEP 4: RE-EVALUATE.

  • Do you have enough time to reach your goal?
  • Do you have access to everything you need?
  • Is this a good time in your life to commit to this goal?
  • Are you motivated and committed?
  • Is this the best plan to achieve the desired results?

STEP 5: SET YOUR COMPASS BEARING.  In other words, you have your eyes on the prize and you have a plan to get there.  Now all you have to do is start off in the right direction and walk the path you’ve laid out for yourself.  Pace yourself and work consistently towards that treasure and you will get there!

STEP 6: CELEBRATE!  When you reach the end of your adventure, don’t forget to celebrate your success!  It’s not just about getting to your goal, it’s about all the wonderful friends you meet along the way and the journey itself 😀
